New Zealand education focuses on 5 key competencies:

- Using language, symbols, and texts

- Relating to others
- Participating and contributing.
These key competencies included in the New Zealand Curriculum, and are woven into all the teaching and learning activities at school. These competencies are important, not just for school, but for life. Your child uses these key competencies in many different situations at home, at cultural occasions, and at work when they grow up.
